The architect's guide to adopting Vercel
Get the most out of your frontend cloud with Vercel and Next.js.

Deploying our Next.js sites onto Vercel is so helpful because I can test what my site will look like in production and solicit feedback through comments from my team every step of the way. I can know at a specific moment in time: "what did that UI look like?" And when you're debugging, I can have a link from a month ago, two weeks ago. That is such a valuable tool to have at my disposal.

- Security: Build with security as a default. Vercel Secure Compute dedicates an IP address to your Vercel workloads and Vercel Firewall allows you to quickly block IP addresses for extra power on top of Vercel's automatic DDoS migitation.
- Functions: Serverless and Edge Functions let you decrease cost, improve uptime, and provide instant auto-scaling to your frontend. When you deploy Next.js (or any of our 40+ supported frameworks) on Vercel, your developers will enjoy a completely seamless experience, finding the same behavior of Next.js on their local machines when compared to their preview and production deployments.
- Caching: Next.js on Vercel automatically combines the best that Next.js has to offer with the benefits of serverless architectures. Through Framework Defined Infrastructure, developers are able to configure caching behavior more easily than ever before, including the latest innovations in frontend caching like Incremental Static Regeneration.

To manage the risks associated with any software migration, it’s a great idea to make small, reversible changes to your system over time so you can quickly roll back to previous, working versions in case something goes wrong. We encourage you to adopt the frontend cloud slowly, ensuring that your confidence stays high no matter what phase of adoption you are at.
To achieve this, we'll create a plan to run a combination of your current system alongside your new Vercel frontend to get started. When you begin, you may only have a few pages being served by Vercel, slowly adding to your new Next.js application over time.
As we’ve worked with our customers over the years, we’ve found two common strategies for incremental adoption.
One approach is to make Vercel the initial entrypoint for your domain. For application paths that have been built in your Next.js application, Vercel will serve your newly crafted page. When a path is requested that hasn’t been built in your new application yet, your application will seamlessly fallback to your existing server and serve a response from there.
With these rewrites in place, the original request’s path, headers, and cookies will be preserved and passed on to your existing server solution. If you want to configure rewrites at a more granular level, check out the Next.js documentation on rewrites.
As another option, you can choose to continue using your existing resources as the main entrypoint to your application and use Vercel on a subpath within your larger application setup.
Depending on your current system, you may need to configure a rewrite or reverse proxy to point at Vercel. With that in place, we will need to make sure we tell Next.js about this routing context.

You’ve done your homework, carefully crafted a plan, and you're ready to start using Vercel's workflow tooling. Our tools are built to give you confidence but, to be fully prepared for a production migration, we need to be responsible engineers and ensure we are safely rolling out your new technology with "escape hatches" for if something unexpected happens.
The first strategy we recommend is to use Vercel Edge Config. With this tool, we’ll add a zero latency flag, passing all requests back to your original server. Depending on the complexity you desire, you can build a flexible routing architecture based on this approach through the power of Vercel Edge Middleware.
We find that companies adopting Vercel only want to keep this flag option around through the first few steps of their migration. Once teams begin working in the frontend cloud, they develop confidence and new levels of productivity quickly through the stability of their new system. Additionally, you'll notice new levels of communication and feedback, and how your new performance gains move your business metrics since milliseconds make millions.
Depending on your current setup, the implementation for this approach can vary in complexity. You'll be trading that complexity for more granular control over how traffic is being routed for your application and we typically only recommend this approach for customers with high-risk requirements.
