The Vercel Edge Network is made up of three types of nodes:
- DNS - In charge of Routing (15 locations)
- Origins - They Host and Run Deployments and serve our APIs (2 locations)
- Edge - They cache at the edge worldwide (150+ locations)
Today, we are introducing our third Origin datacenter: GRU1, located in São Paulo, Brazil.
What does this mean for our customers that reach or live in South America?
- Drastically lower latency for serverless Docker deployments
- Increased redundancy and lower latency for origin hits for static deployments
- Faster and more reliable API calls
Speed testing the latency of GRU from Buenos Aires, Argentina using gru.now.sh.
With this announcement, all new Serverless Docker applications will scale to GRU1 automatically, along with our other Origin locations, with the maintained ability to scale to any combination of locations.
Deciding that your app should be deployed and served only in GRU1 is as simple as one command. If you are in South America, this will be your new default, automatically.
now --regions gru
Scaling an existing Serverless Docker deployment or alias to only GRU1 is just as simple.
now scale brazil-flag.now.sh gru
Any current Serverless Docker apps can be scaled to GRU1, in addition to all other Origin locations also.
now scale brazil-flag.now.sh all
Showing the latency differences between all of our Origin Nodes, SFO, BRU, and now GRU; testing from Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This new Origin, located in São Paulo, Brazil, is one step further in providing the least amount of latency for everyone to access the cloud.
Along with latency, GRU1 provides an additional failover location for us to provide from, in case an upstream cloud provider has reduced availability. This will provide users with a more guaranteed service when using Now.
The demand for our service is continually inspiring us to provide a better and faster experience for everyone in the world, and GRU1 is one more step in this direction.
GRU1 has been built on the foundation of our new infrastructure, Now Cloud v2 for Serverless Docker applications. This means that GRU1 will give better support for applications due to using this new infrastructure, providing much faster performance and a lot quicker cold-boot times; to name only a few advantages.
