We can’t see the
future
but we have
some predictions.

1

The Web will be Edge‑first.

More developers will embrace edge infrastructure because of its better performance and greater flexibility. As a result, more dev tools and frameworks will be built with the edge in mind.

“We have a global customer base and it’s important to us that our speed is unbiased regardless of location. When we deploy with Vercel, users around the world are instantly served our latest site at an edge near them. With our previous provider, visitors were often being served from an edge in the U.S. even if they were in Asia or Europe.”

“Personalization and feature flags are not just for tech giants. A lot of the way software is built has not been democratized yet due to a lack of good public infrastructure. Developers are going to start looking for tooling with great DX that’s built with the edge in mind.”

CEO of Vercel

Speed and flexibility will define developer tooling.

As our favorite frameworks get faster and tools like Turborepo make monorepos more accessible, developers will experience improved workflows and fewer headaches.

“Software development should be about making beautiful, performant, and secure websites. Modern frameworks like Next.js are LEGO bricks for developers and Vercel is the foundation they build on. More and more organizations are choosing workflows that eliminate friction from the software development lifecycle and put developers first.”

Real-time data will lead to better user experiences.

Developers will rely on real user data to improve site performance and create faster, more innovative experiences than ever before.

“2022 is shaping up to be a watershed year for Svelte. The imminent stable release of SvelteKit will give every kind of developer a rock-solid foundation for building apps faster than ever before. We want to make full-stack web development accessible to everyone.”
Rich Harris
Creator of Svelte

Web development will get more collaborative (with less code).

Low-code and no-code tools will continue to gain popularity, empowering more stakeholders across the organization to participate in Web projects.

"2022 will unify the React ecosystem around Suspense for data fetching, optimizations, and tooling. We'll also start seeing further unification of CSS tooling and delivery in the ecosystem.”
